Yasaka Shrine, popularly known as "Gion-san", is one of Kyoto's most iconic landmarks. The main shrine, a national treasure, as well as 29 buildings of the auxiliary and subordinate shrines are designated as important cultural properties. The Gion Festival, one of Japan's three major festivals with a tradition going back over 1,100 years, is well known throughout the world.

Hanami-koji, where maiko (apprentice geisha) can be seen going about their days, has been Gion's "main street" for centuries. The stone-paved thoroughfare, dark vermilion red latticework, and inuyarai fences give the street the atmosphere of days past. Lined with teahouses and ryotei, as well as temples, shrines, and facilities for enjoying the arts, glimpse the charms of Kyoto's singular blend of old and new.

Maruyama Park

This is the oldest park in Kyoto City with a vast area of about 86,000 square meters. In spring, approximately 680 cherry trees, mainly Somei Yoshino varieties, come into bloom, and the park is famous as one of the best cherry blossom viewing spots in Kyoto. The 12-meter-high weeping cherry tree called "Gion no Yozakura" is a well-known sight throughout Japan.

Yasui Konpira-gu Shrine

Yasui Konpira-gu Shrine is known for its blessings in severing bad relationships and bringing good ones together. Shrine visitors line up to pass through the hole in the "Monument for En-kiri En-musubi," a huge power stone in the shape of an ema (votive tablet). They do this while holding a katashiro (paper doll) with a wish written on it. Passing through the front breaks relationships, and going through the hole again from the back will bring you a good one.

The five-story pagoda of Hokan-ji Temple, popularly known as Yasaka Pagoda, is said to have been built by Prince Shotoku. The present pagoda was rebuilt by Ashikaga Yoshinori in 1440. When most of the temple buildings were destroyed by fire during the Onin War in the mid-1400s, only this pagoda was miraculously spared.

Our exclusive guest-only area, "Yasaka Living", offers freshly ground coffee, soft drinks, snacks, and sweets made by the hotel patissier, as well as alcoholic beverages such as Kyoto's locally brewed sake, beer, and domestic and foreign wines for a fee. Please feel free to use the room as a second living room for chatting, reading, and other relaxing moments during your stay.
