Hanami-koji, where maiko (apprentice geisha) can be seen going about their days, has been Gion's "main street" for centuries. The stone-paved thoroughfare, dark vermilion red latticework, and inuyarai fences give the street the atmosphere of days past. Lined with teahouses and ryotei, as well as temples, shrines, and facilities for enjoying the arts, glimpse the charms of Kyoto's singular blend of old and new.

This is the oldest park in Kyoto City with a vast area of about 86,000 square meters. In spring, approximately 680 cherry trees, mainly Somei Yoshino varieties, come into bloom, and the park is famous as one of the best cherry blossom viewing spots in Kyoto. The 12-meter-high weeping cherry tree called "Gion no Yozakura" is a well-known sight throughout Japan.

When most of the temple buildings were destroyed by fire during the Onin War in the mid-1400s, only this pagoda was miraculously spared.
